Winners Study the Game Before They Play It

Understanding the iGaming Industry Before You Apply

Breaking into the iGaming and sports betting industry can be exciting. It is fast-moving, innovative, international and full of opportunities for talented professionals.

But there is one mistake we see candidates make far too often:

They apply for the role before they take the time to understand the game.

In a competitive recruitment market, simply having the right experience on your CV isn’t always enough. The candidates who stand out are often the ones who have taken the time to understand the industry, the company and where their skills fit into the bigger picture.

1. Study the Game Before You Play It

Think about applying for an iGaming role like entering a new market.

You wouldn’t walk into an unfamiliar market without understanding how it works. The same principle applies to your career.

Before pressing “Apply”, take some time to understand:

  • The iGaming ecosystem: Get familiar with operators, suppliers, platforms, payment providers, affiliates, sportsbooks, online casinos and other key players.
  • The role you’re applying for: Understand what the position actually involves and how it contributes to the wider business.
  • The company: Research its products, markets, brand, competitors and recent developments.
  • The target market: Africa’s iGaming landscape isn’t one-size-fits-all. Different countries have different regulations, consumer behaviours, competitive landscapes and opportunities.
  • Industry terminology: Understanding the language of iGaming can help you communicate with greater confidence during the recruitment process.
  • Your own value: Think beyond your job title. Consider which of your skills, achievements and experience could solve problems for an iGaming business.

You Don’t Need to Know Everything

Studying the industry doesn’t mean you need to become an iGaming expert overnight.

It means showing that you’re curious, prepared and willing to learn.

If you’re transitioning from another industry, your transferable skills can still be incredibly valuable. Sales, marketing, technology, finance, operations, customer experience, compliance and leadership skills can all have a place within iGaming.

The difference is learning how those skills translate into the industry you’re trying to enter.

Preparation Can Set You Apart

Recruiters and hiring managers see countless applications.

So ask yourself:

What will make mine memorable?

It might not be another qualification or another line on your CV. It could simply be the fact that you’ve taken the time to understand the industry and can explain why you want to be part of it.

That’s the difference between saying:

“I’m interested in iGaming.” And saying: “I’ve researched your business, understand the market you’re operating in and can see how my experience could contribute to your growth.”

The second conversation is far more powerful.

Don’t just apply for the game. Study it. Understand it. Then play to win.
