Stepping out of your comfort zone at work

Everyone’s got a comfort zone; it’s that place where familiarity and routine provide you with a sense of safety and predictability. But staying in a rut is the worst thing you can do for your career and your life. It’s much more important to look for ways to get out of your comfort zone and explore new possibilities. So, how do you break free at work and become your best professional self? Here are a few ways to step out of your comfort zone at work.

Fight your routine

Naturally, it’s impossible to change these habits overnight – it’s a long-term process that requires much endurance and focus. Now and then, spend some time with your colleagues in other departments and get some inspiration from your coworkers. How do they work? What habits do they have that may help you to grow?

Change your perspective

Attend a conference that has nothing to do with your current work. Befriend someone who has a different outlook on life, preferably an argumentative loudmouth with strong opinions. Look at different news sources. Learn another language or different computer program. Do a short online course about something that is not necessarily work-related. This will help you look at the world in a different way and open yourself up to new opportunities.

Ask for new things to do

If you don’t know where to start to get out of your comfort zone, don’t be afraid to ask. Ask your boss for new responsibilities at work. The goal isn’t to pack your schedule and increase your stress. Instead, you want to challenge the norm and break up your routine in such a way that you think differently. Look for a new initiative or project that interests you but isn’t something that you would feel completely comfortable accomplishing. Then, don’t be afraid to say “yes.”

Take a step back

A bubble isn’t necessarily a boring place. Many people who are completely caught up in a comfort zone have hectic lives. You may be extremely busy, rushing from one thing to the next. But if you take a closer look, for all the activity you may not be extending and evolving yourself at all. Ditch the things that do not amount to much, making time in your life to challenge yourself.

Consider experience abroad

Another possibility to develop yourself is to consider an experience abroad. Is your company planning a foreign expansion? Chances like this are dreams come true – with such opportunities, you can improve your intercultural competence, enhance your foreign language skills, and develop valuable contacts.

Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to learn new things. It’s in unknown territories that you have the opportunity to take risks (controlled) When a task is particularly difficult, there’s no other choice but to roll up your sleeves and use all your neurons. Nevertheless, when a mission is a little less challenging, it’s not a reason to settle for laziness! There’s always a way to have an impact in your work.
