Marketing: How to Rank Well in Your Company

Marketing departments are often the last departments to be added to a company as many entrepreneurs believe they can do the work themselves. This is because marketing professionals do not directly generate revenue, like for example, sales staff, which subsequently leads to a lot of their work going unnoticed.

Most business professionals believe that if they can’t see the results immediately, there are no results to be seen. Unfortunately marketing does not produce results with a BAM, but rather creeps up slowly to the high ranking it deserves. How do you get other professionals in the work place to appreciate your work? Communicate regularly.

1. Send out an internal mailer describing:

  • Your current projects
  • Your progress and results
  • How it contributes to the company
  • Your future projects

Send out a mailer once a month to remind your colleagues and superiors why you make up a significant part of the team and why you are awesome. The mailer can include metrics on visits, leads, and customers, as well as an evaluation of each marketing channel (blog, email, social, etc.).

The trick is not to confuse them with marketing buzz words, but to keep it simple and informative. If there were short-comings, admit to them. As long as there are plans in place to improve it is all part of the feedback. Having said that, don’t keep your achievements in the shadows. This is your time to shine!

2. Take charge of Internal Marketing

Internal Marketing is not just about marketing your own department, but about promoting the business and its policies to employees as if they are the company’s clients. The objective is to get employees’ attitudes and behaviour to align with the vision of the company and to ultimately optimise staff retention.

Coming up with an Internal Marketing strategy for employee preservation is a great way to gain popularity. Creating staff competitions to meet of targets, working together on a cause or planning a company event, is all part of Internal Marketing and does wonders for getting employees to bond.

3. Collaborate Across Departments

Have regular meetings with other departments to discuss quality of leads, brand consistency, corporate communication, targets and target markets. This will create an open line of communication between departments and allow for collaboration.

4. Offer training sessions

Training sessions are a good way to directly relate to staff members of other departments and at the same time add value. At Initiate International, our marketing department has regular training sessions on social media guidelines, job advert crafting and Search Engine Optimisation. Offering these training sessions add value to our staff members and allow us the opportunity to gain appreciation in the work place.

In conclusion, in order to gain appreciation in the work place, you need to communicate with your co-workers and establish a relationship with other departments in the business. Tell each them what you are busy with, what plans are in the pipeline and offer your assistance. You will be surprised at how easy it becomes to gain appreciation and respect at the office if you apply these methods.
