Every person deserves career happiness, so when your current work situation is no longer satisfying, a switch may be in order. Starting a new career with no experience in the field can seem like a daunting task, but it can be done. You just need focus, drive, preparation and motivation. Here are some steps you can take to make that leap.
Lead with your story, not your history
We’ve already established that your CV isn’t a great opener for dialogue with an employer or client in your new field. So what is? A compelling story. In order to explain to potential employers why you are pursuing a different direction, create a story that illustrates your desire to transition to a new career. When crafting this narrative, emphasize your passion for the job and your willingness to take risks to explore the new path. Also include the reasons for making the change and how you can contribute to the organisation’s needs despite not having industry-specific experience.
Cultivate a reputation/brand around your new career
Simply saying that you want to enter this new field is not enough. You have to walk the walk and show recruiters and hiring managers that you are serious about this new change. Do so by sharing your thoughts and opinions on relevant industry topics by sharing articles, engaging with posts, and even posting original content around hot topics. The more you can curate your conversation around this new area, the better.
Get educated
If your new career requires a qualification that you don’t have, make sure to start taking relevant classes to show your commitment and interest. A suitable qualification provides you with a base to build on. Some employers may consider your application if you possess appropriate education but no relevant experience.
Network
When transitioning careers, your chances are better if you can explain yourself and demonstrate why a company should take a chance on you. You won’t be able to do that by applying online so you need to start networking and building relationships with people in your targeted industry and companies. One of my favourite ways to do this is to start conducting information interviews about the job, company, and industry. People love to talk about themselves so reach out and get them talking. Make it all about them and they will love you!
Volunteer
In addition to allowing you to test the waters with little lost other than your time, volunteering or pro-bono work is one of the best ways to get some experience that a future employer will find both relevant and valuable. Plus, an employer is much more likely to give you a shot if the cost to them is ZERO! Considering a career in graphic design? Offer your services to a non-profit to help them redesign their website, social media pages or marketing collateral. Does a career in Financial Planning & Analysis seem interesting? Offer to help a start-up or small business to review their finances and expenses to help them identify ways to cut costs.
Transitioning careers can be a frustrating experience, but approaching your search proactively, with tenacity, and with a positive mindset will lead to success. If you’re looking for an exciting career opportunity, make sure you click through to our job section.
