Found an iGaming or sports betting role that looks like your next big opportunity? Before you hit Apply, take a closer look.
A job title can sound exciting, but the real story lies in the responsibilities, required skills, reporting lines and performance expectations. Understanding these details helps you decide whether a role suits your experience and how to position yourself as a strong candidate.
In a competitive industry, applying smarter can be just as important as applying more often. Here are two ways to decode a job description before submitting your CV.
1. Look Beyond the Title and Identify What the Employer Really Needs
A title such as Marketing Manager, CRM Specialist or Head of Operations can mean very different things from one iGaming business to another.
One Marketing Manager might focus on player acquisition and FTDs, while another may be responsible for brand strategy, retention, budgets and managing an entire team.
Before applying, look for these key details:
- Essential skills: Identify the must-have technical skills, industry knowledge, platforms or tools. Separate genuine requirements from skills listed as advantageous.
- Seniority and ownership: Does the role involve executing campaigns, managing a team, owning a budget or setting regional strategy?
- Reporting lines: Check who the role reports to and whether it involves managing direct reports or working across departments.
- KPIs and performance expectations: Look for targets linked to FTDs, conversion rates, player retention, GGR, operational efficiency or compliance, depending on the position.
- Market and location requirements: In African iGaming, experience in a particular market, understanding local regulations or travelling between countries may be important.
These details help you understand what success in the role is likely to involve.
Top tip: Highlight the three to five most important requirements and compare them with your actual experience. This gives you a clearer idea of where you are a strong match and which achievements deserve attention in your CV.
Remember, you don’t need to meet every desirable requirement to apply. Focus on the genuine essentials and the value you can bring.
2. Match Your Experience to the Role and Apply With Purpose
Once you understand what the employer needs, the next step is to show how your experience aligns with those requirements.
Simply repeating the wording of a job description won’t make your application stand out. Employers want evidence that you can perform the role, solve problems and contribute to business objectives.
Here’s how to strengthen your application:
- Tailor your CV: Bring the most relevant experience, skills and achievements to the forefront instead of sending the same CV for every vacancy.
- Demonstrate business impact: Explain how your work supported acquisition, improved player engagement, streamlined processes or strengthened compliance. Use verified figures where available, and never invent metrics.
- Show the right level of experience: If the position requires leadership, highlight team management, decision-making and ownership. For a specialist role, focus on your technical expertise and delivery.
- Address the genuine requirements: If a role requires experience in a specific African market, a particular language or knowledge of local regulations, make relevant experience clear.
- Ask questions where necessary: If reporting lines, responsibilities or expectations are unclear, seek clarification from the recruiter rather than making assumptions.
For example, if a CRM role focuses on player retention, don’t just write that you managed CRM campaigns. Explain how you worked with player segmentation, lifecycle journeys or campaign optimisation to support engagement and retention.
If you don’t have direct experience in every area, identify transferable skills that demonstrate your ability to succeed. Be honest about your experience while showing how it relates to the role.
Top tip: Before submitting your application, ask yourself: Can I explain why I’m a good fit for this specific role, using real examples from my experience? If you can, you’re in a much stronger position to make your application count.
