The Interview Mistakes That Cost Candidates Great Jobs

You’ve polished your CV, found the right opportunity and finally secured the interview. You’re qualified, experienced and ready for your next career move.

So why do great candidates sometimes walk away without the job?

In a competitive industry like iGaming and sports betting, having the right experience is only part of the equation. How you prepare, communicate and demonstrate your value during the interview can have just as much impact.

Here are two common interview mistakes that could be costing you opportunities:

1. Walking Into the Interview Unprepared

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is assuming their experience will speak for itself.

Interviewers want to see that you’ve taken the time to understand the business, the role and the market. Turning up knowing little beyond the job description can quickly make it look like you’re applying for a job rather than pursuing a career opportunity.

Before your interview, make sure you understand:

  • The company: What does it do? Who are its customers? What markets does it operate in?
  • The role: What will you actually be responsible for, and what KPIs are likely to matter?
  • The industry: Understand the current iGaming or sports betting landscape and the challenges businesses face.
  • The terminology: Be comfortable discussing relevant concepts such as GGR, LTV, CPA, acquisition, retention, CRM, compliance and player lifecycle — depending on the role.
  • Your own experience: Be ready with specific examples of campaigns, projects, targets, challenges and results you have delivered.

Remember: Preparation doesn’t mean memorising answers. It means being ready to have a meaningful conversation.

2. Telling Them What You Did — Instead of Showing Them Your Value

Another common mistake is giving answers that describe responsibilities without demonstrating impact.

Saying:

“I managed acquisition campaigns.”

tells the interviewer what you did.

Explaining:

“I managed acquisition campaigns across multiple African markets, optimised channel performance and helped improve CPA while scaling qualified player acquisition.”

When answering interview questions, think beyond your responsibilities. Focus on impact.

Where possible, talk about:

  • The challenge: What problem were you trying to solve?
  • Your action: What did you personally do?
  • The result: What changed because of your work?
  • The numbers: Can you quantify the outcome?
  • The learning: What did the experience teach you?

This is particularly important in iGaming and sports betting, where performance is often measurable.

Whether you work in marketing, CRM, affiliates, product, operations, compliance, technology or commercial, think about the metrics and outcomes connected to your role.

Did you improve retention? Reduce CPA? Increase conversion? Grow GGR? Improve player engagement? Streamline a process? Launch into a new market? Strengthen compliance? Those details turn an interview answer from a job description into a career story.

Your Interview Is Your Opportunity

The interview isn’t simply about proving that you meet the requirements on the job description.

It’s your opportunity to show the interviewer how you think, what you’ve achieved and what you could bring to their team. You don’t need to have every answer. You need to demonstrate that you’ve prepared, understand the opportunity and can clearly communicate the value of your experience.

Know the industry. Know the role. Know your numbers. Know your value.
