Innovative ways to get your dream job

There is a difference between a job that pays the bills and a fulfilling career. As unattainable as a dream job might sound, with the right amount of forethought, preparation, and strategies, you can make it happen. Here are 5 unconventional ways to land your dream job.

Figure out what you really want

Take time to do a self-assessment of your values, how you like to work and what you’d be compelled to do even if you never got paid. Once you figure out what you want, it’s time to string that together with your skills and past experience in a way that makes sense for your next position. Knowing your story well enough won’t just help you in the interview, it’ll help you with your application materials and networking efforts.

Reach out to your connections

Your CV is a good first step to get your foot in the door and describe what you’ve accomplished in your career, but don’t forget your connections could also help you land your dream job. People are generally happy to help others out, if they’re just told how. Make sure you cast a wide net and see who’s open to chatting, reach out to old and new connections alike, and let them know what your goals are. It’ll help them help you.

Always upskill yourself

An amazing personality is great to have, but skills always win, even over likability and charm. The most successful people know that to achieve their career goals it’s important to be proactive and expand their skills. Develop mastery in your chosen profession so you will continue to create job opportunities throughout your life. Great companies hire good people who are willing to learn and who are not afraid to educate themselves. There is a wealth of learning available to you – on and off the internet.

Start early

Twenty and thirty-somethings have more flexibility when it comes to test-driving different careers. The process of self-discovery is much easier when you’re unencumbered by substantial financial burdens, and when you haven’t yet reached a level in a career where it’s tougher to turn back. It’s never too late to pursue your passion, but it’s always better to start as soon as possible.

Have realistic expectations

We’ve spent a lifetime hearing we can do and be anything we want, so our expectations about work can get a little distorted. Even if you’re lucky enough to hold your dream job, there’s no such thing as the perfect work situation. Every job has its ups and downs, and aspects we love and aspects we don’t love. And “dream job” doesn’t mean “cushy job.” There will be some days you feel like shutting the alarm off and going back to sleep, but many more where you feel more energized by the prospect of work than you ever thought possible.
