3 Tips for creating a perfect portfolio

A good portfolio can help you snag the clients you are after and attract the attention of professionals that can advance your career. When done well, a portfolio should impress and surprise the viewer, demonstrating how you and your work will be an invaluable asset to the viewer, whether that be as a full-time member or on a freelance basis. Here are 3 tips for creating a killer portfolio.

Highlight your best work, not all of it

We know that quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality. Make sure you only ever show your very best work in your portfolio, and if you aren’t 100 per cent happy with the outcome then don’t feature it. It’s often difficult to self-edit, but it’s important to be quite ruthless when selecting the work to ensure that all of it is up to scratch and of a standard that you’re happy with.

Show your versatility

Make sure you mix up your presentation, so the full range of your capabilities is on display. This could include both personal and experimental projects that could help you get the job of your dreams. If all your work on your portfolio is similar, employers may feel that your creativity is limited, so make sure that you showcase your versatility.

Curate for the job you want

Your portfolio defines who you are and where you want to go in your career. If you have a specific interest in a certain field, that’s what you need to focus your portfolio on. Although it may be the thing that you’re most proud of, a potential corporate employer probably isn’t interested in the experimental photoshoot you’ve just worked on. Only show the kind of work that you want to get commissioned for or hired to do.

You work hard at what you do – so prove it with an awesome portfolio. With these techniques, you’ll have a portfolio that showcases your strengths and gets you one step closer to achieving your career goals.
